Thousand Oaks Star, June 5, 1980
The following newspaper article covers all 28 homicides handled by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department since 1958 that were still unsolved at the time of publication.
The following five victims/cases from this list were already on my radar:
- Doris "Dorrie" Diaz, Aug. 30, 1969
- Ernestine Terella, May 1, 1972
- Teresa Lynne Hardin, May 10, 1978
- Ventura County John Doe, Nov. 9, 1979 (NamUs #UP16758, Doe Network case 4792UMCA)
- Esteban Franco, Nov. 23, 1979 (previously known as "John Doe Bones," IDed in 2024)
Of the remaining 23 cases that were previously unknown to me prior to finding this article, seventeen especially caught my attention as possibly being worth looking into more. As is always the case when choosing which cases to highlight on my blog, the reasoning behind my singling these seventeen victims out is arbitrary and subjective. Because these cases were completely unknown to me prior to finding this article, I do not yet know which, if any, have been solved; I will update this page if/when I am able to do further research. Here are the seventeen other cases from this article that caught my eye:
- Daryle Kelch, Nov. 11, 1958
- Mary Netherlain, Mar. 4, 1961
- Solomon Browning, July 29, 1964
- Peggy Diane Whatley, Oct. 31, 1971
- Jose Gabriel Montez, Oct. 9 / 25, 1972 ~~
- Pauline Denise Whitehead, Dec. 14, 1972
- Michael Eugene Westergren, Sept. 13, 1973 **
- David Fogle, Jan. 25, 1974
- Raul Hernandez Torrez, Apr. 25, 1976 ~~
- Noreen Shea, Sept. 29, 1977
- Lorraine Rodriguez, Dec. 27, 1977
- Martha Corea, Aug. 28, 1978
- Manuel Pena, Sept. 20, 1978
- Alma Zuniga, Mar. 11, 1979
- David Wideman, Mar. 27, 1979
- Michelle Immediato, Aug. 5, 1979
- Gerald Jackson, Apr. 3, 1980
