The following article concerns the murders of Carol Hilburn and Betty Cloer. At the time it was thought that both young women may have been murdered by the same then-unknown person. Eight months after the publication of this article, in September 2003, the murderer of Betty Marie Cloer was identified through DNA as a man named Phillip Arthur Thompson, who was then arrested and convicted for the crime. Carol Hilburn's murder, however, is still unsolved.
