CA papers on John Annibel, 1998 to 2022

The following eleven articles concern all four murders that are connected to suspected serial killer John Annibel in some way:

  1. The 1976 murder of 15-year-old Sherry Lynn Smith, which Annibel is suspected in. Annibel's twin brother was dating Sherry's older sister at the time; the pair later married. Both Annibel and his twin, who lived near the Smiths, served as pallbearers at Sherry's funeral.
  2. The 1980 disappearance and murder of Andrea LaDeRoute, a 20-year-old Tolowa woman. Andrea was living with Annibel, her boyfriend at the time, when she disappeared. There were signs of violence at their home. Andrea's skull was later found in 2002 on a site where Annibel had previously worked for 13 years. Annibel is suspected for the murder, but has not been charged for it.
  3. The 1998 murder of Debbie Sloan, a 42-year-old mother, in Laytonville. This is the only murder for which Annibel has been convicted. Note: Debbie's daughter, Rachel, was also the victim of a murder (see below). Debbie's (ex-)husband, Allen Sloan, was Indigenous, while Debbie was white; despite this, she still lived on the Laytonville/Hopland Rancheria with her children, who were enrolled in the tribe.
  4. The 2012 disappearance of Rachel Sloan, a 19-year-old Indigenous girl from the Hopland Rancheria, and the subsequent discovery of her body the following year. Rachel is the daughter of victim Debbie Sloan. Note: John Annibel is not suspected in Rachel Sloan's death in any form; however, she is often brought up in conjunction with the cases due to the location, as well as the fact that Rachel's mother is a confirmed victim of Annibel. Rachel's murder is still unsolved.

Andrea LaDeRoute and Rachel Sloan were both Indigenous young women. The two of them, as well as Rachel's mother Debbie, are also mentioned in the three To’ Kee Skuy’ Soo Ney-wo-chek’ Project Reports on MMIWG2S in Northern California created by the Yurok Tribal Court, also available in the Files section of this blog.

The eleven articles below were published from 1998 to 2022, and were accessed through NewsBank. I have put them all together due to the overlap in subjects.
